Landon Donovan eyes break from soccer
Los Angeles Galaxy captain Landon Donovan reiterated his desire to take a break from his soccer career, citing physical and mental exhaustion, and questioned his role on the United States national team in an interview this week with ESPN.
"Your body's going to tell you it's time to take a break and that's what my body is telling me this year, there's no question," Donovan said.
The Galaxy start their playoff campaign Thursday against the Vancouver Whitecaps, and Donovan said he'd have to "push through these next games" to finish the season.
"I don't want to feel that way. I want to do it because I'm enjoying it and loving it," Donovan told ESPN. "So I need time where I can just pause, and breathe and rest, let my body heal, let my mind refresh, and I think at that point, I'll be excited to play again."
Donovan, 30, said in an August interview with Goal.com that he would consider retiring when his MLS contract expires after the 2013 season. Donovan told ESPN he would consider playing elsewhere after his eighth season with the Galaxy ends this year.
"The hard part is I really love this team," he said. "I love this city. I love playing for this team. I love playing for our owner. So it would be hard to leave here but I've thought a lot about that, but maybe you need something different. Eight years of anything is a long time."
A "pause" after the MLS offseason would mean Donovan would miss the start of the final round of the United States' World Cup qualifying campaign, which begins in February.
Knee injuries kept Donovan from playing for the U.S. in September and October in the last four games of the previous round of qualifying.
Donovan said his absence from training camp has strained his relationship with U.S. coach Jurgen Klinsmann and his teammates, to the point where he questions if he's still wanted around the national team.
"When you're a guy who's never been hurt for the most part and then all of a sudden you have all these injuries, I think people start to question it," Donovan said. "Maybe he's faking it, or maybe he's not really hurt, or maybe he doesn't want to come in. That's really frustrating."
Donovan has played for the U.S. in each World Cup since 2002, but is not concerned about his preparation for the 2014 World Cup.
"If I'm not enjoying playing anymore, the World Cup is the last thing on my mind," he said. "I need to make sure that I'm enjoying playing every day. If I'm not enjoying it, none of that stuff really matters."
Donovan spent time in the 2010 and 2012 seasons on loan with Everton, but he ruled out a return to the Premier League club this winter.
"I'm no good to any team if I'm playing half-hearted or if I'm playing at 80 percent physically," he said. "I can go through the motions and do an OK job, but I don't want to be doing an OK job. I want to be making an impact."
Donovan said he is proud of a career in which he has become the U.S.'s top career goalscorer and won four MLS Cups.
"I don't feel any obligation to play. I don't feel any responsibility to play," Donovan said. "I think I've put in a lot into this whole thing. I'm proud of what I've done and what I've been a part of. But I can't fake it."
If his career does end, Donovan said he looks forward to traveling without playing, as well as business and broadcasting opportunities.
"I honestly don't exactly know what's going to come and what the future holds, and I'm OK with that. But I'm not going to know until I get away from it for a bit."

They won just once in their last 10 games and they still qualified for the MLS Cup Playoffs.
They haven’t beaten the LA Galaxy at the Home Depot Center in three tries and haven’t even scored a goal in the process.
In fact, they’re the only team in this year’s postseason with a sub-.500 record.
But take heart, Vancouver Whitecaps fans: Landon Donovan knows your pain.
“I’ve been a part of two teams that have backed their way into the playoffs and ended up winning the championship,” he noted on Wednesday after training, referring to his 2001 San Jose Earthquakes and 2005 Galaxy sides.
And he’s absolutely aware that despite their heavy underdog status against LA on Thursday night (10:30 pm ET, NBCSN, TSN in Canada, live chat on MLSsoccer.com), the ‘Caps have an excellent chance of pulling off a giant upset.
“There’s no question this team has a lot of talent,” the Galaxy captain said. “… We’re looking all over the field and they’ve got a lot of high-profile and very talented players. And if they play the way they did last week vs. Salt Lake, they have every chance of upsetting us, so we’ve got to be aware and cautious.”
Vancouver’s offensive woes have been well documented during their run-in to close the regular season. During those 10 games to finish out 2012, they scored only seven goals – four of them in a 4-0 rout of Chivas USA. Last weekend at Rio Tinto Stadium, they buttoned up and showed why they were the fourth-best defensive team in MLS this season in terms of goals allowed.
That may be the approach when they take the pitch at the Home Depot Center on Thursday and look to stun the defending MLS Cup champions in the one-off Knockout Round.
“If that’s the case, two things need to happen,” Donovan explained. “We need to be very patient and we need to be very alert and aware when the ball turns over and they counter. They have two very dynamic attacking players in Dane [Richards] and Darren Mattocks that can really make you pay if you’re not alert, so we have to be on our toes in that way.
“And if a goal doesn’t come early and we’re putting pressure on, we’ve just got to be patient and keep going.”
And should the Whitecaps come out firing, Donovan is wary of the possibility of facing a five-headed monster of attacking talent that includes Richards, Mattocks, Kenny Miller, Camilo and especially Barry Robson (who he calls “one of the best players in this league”).
“There’s not many teams that have that kind of explosiveness, dynamic ability and speed,” he said. “So if they are all on the field, it’ll present a challenge for us.”
The last time the Galaxy were caught so unaware on their own turf, it was a 2-1 loss to Toronto FC in the CONCACAF Champions League quarterfinals in March that saw LA bow out of the tournament in stunning fashion. The Galaxy may have been in a different place then, with injury issues and what they’ve repeatedly deemed a lack of mental preparedness.
But, Donovan points out, that experience did prove a telling lesson as another unfancied Canadian team comes to town and forces LA to maintain their focus.
“When we do that, more often than not, we’re successful,” he said. “It doesn’t always go right, but more often than not, we’ve got a chance to win. If we don’t do those things, we’re vulnerable, and we’re very beatable. It doesn’t matter who you’re playing against.
“Vancouver is a much better team than Toronto is. And if we’re not ready to play, they could easily beat us.”

A few weeks ago, I wrote a column that overflowed with optimism at the rapidly growing scene that has been soccer in the U.S. over the last decade.
But that was before American soccer star Landon Donovan had an interview with ESPN FC, ESPN’s soccer blog, revealing his reservations about continuing his career.
While the 30-year-old Donovan had made references to his potential retirement after the conclusion of the 2010 World Cup, it seemed more of a response to the U.S. national team’s disappointing second round exit than as a statement to be taken seriously.
Now, after Donovan’s interview — something that has become an increasingly rare occurrence since the World Cup — Donovan’s U.S. soccer future seems much more bleak than ever before. While you never want to think one player is bigger than the team or, in this case, the entire soccer scene in the United States, Donovan may be one player that proves that old adage wrong.
Since he first burst onto the scene as a young player, making his first appearance in a World Cup game at the tender age of 20, Landon Donovan has quickly become the most successful American soccer player in history.
And no, that’s not an overstatement.
As far as all-time statistics go, Donovan leads the U.S. national team in almost every category. He holds the record for most goals (49), most assists (48), most games started (130) and most points (146). The only category that Donovan has yet to conquer is total appearances (a number he could easily overtake should he continue playing through the next World Cup), as he currently sits in second place behind Cobi Jones.
So when Donovan admitted in the tell-all interview that he has struggled with motivation throughout much of the latter part of his career and said there is only a “50-50” chance he will play in the 2014 World Cup, it was no surprise that his statements had reverberations throughout the U.S. soccer community.
After all, Donovan has meant more to American soccer than just a set of records.
His rise to soccer stardom has directly paralleled soccer’s popularity in the United States — the sport’s popularity even hit its highest point to date all thanks to one single goal by Donovan.
Ranked as the 20th greatest moment in sport’s history over the last 20 years by ESPN, Donovan’s last minute goal against Algeria in the 2010 World Cup sent the U.S. team into the second round of the tournament and U.S. sports fans into a soccer frenzy.
That game would go on to become the most watched soccer game in ESPN history with nearly four million households tuning in to see Donovan’s heroics. On average, the number of American households watching the 2010 World Cup was up over 60 percent from the previous World Cup just four years earlier.
Under Donovan’s watch, American soccer has made great strides.
While the league started with 12 teams in his first MLS season, it has now grown to 20 teams just 10 years later. Sure, the overall increase in talent in the league has a large part to do with the fact that the league is growing. But Donovan set a precedent for a path not often used by good American players before him — for America’s best and brightest soccer stars to stay in the U.S. domestic league even after his career took off.
Over his career, Donovan has motivated thousands of young soccer players to continue playing the sport and, along the way, has convinced even more Americans to become soccer fans.
With that being said, the potential retirement of U.S. soccer’s greatest player, in the midst of his best form and highest popularity, could send U.S. soccer back into the Stone Age as far as the future of the sport is concerned. After all, Donovan is the face of American soccer.
To put it in perspective, just imagine a player like LeBron James retiring from basketball at this stage in his career — having just won his first NBA Championship to go along with a gold medal in the Olympics, James is at the peak of his career.
The same is true of Donovan’s career at this point. Donovan comes off a championship-winning MLS season with the Los Angeles Galaxy, and he currently boasts nine goals and 14 assists this year despite battling constant injuries.
The loss of Donovan would not only hurt the U.S. national team’s chances at improving on its second round exit in the most recent World Cup, but more importantly it would hurt soccer’s chances for continued growth in the United States as well.
Donovan is more than just a soccer player; he has become a brand, a walking promotion for American soccer.
The day Donovan plays his last game for the national team will mark the end of an era of considerable growth in American soccer, and only time will tell if Donovan’s influence on the game can ever be replicated.
